Because many of us grow up in families and communities that are not always nurturing, caring and supportive, we are not taught how to appropriately soothe ourselves through life's upsets and calamities. We may develop destructive ways of coping by numbing ourselves with addictions to food, alcohol, drugs, or sex. Many of us go through life completely unaware of the scars we carry within. We may act out by getting angry or hurting ourselves or someone we love. We may find it is difficult to trust and form meaningful, lasting relationships. Psychotherapy can help us gain mastery over the emotional triggers that disrupt our lives and take away our power to live fully and authentically as ourselves. I believe a trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship where people feel safe sharing their thoughts, feelings, dreams and wishes, is essential to the healing process. I work collaboratively with my clients to formulate a treatment strategy that makes sense to both of us. I take a thorough history that may include a genogram. I try to help clients get beyond their stories and into their bodies where deep emotions, when tolerated, give tremendous guidance for healing. Some of the treatment modalities I use are: cognitive therapy, EMDR, guided imagery, meditation and hypnosis. People become aware of their ability to tap into their inner wisdom so they can use it to guide them through life's challenges and rewards. When our wounds heal we are free to discover the perfection of our true nature. It is an honor and a privilege to sit with clients as they share their life and embark on a healing journey with me.
